Upanishad of Immortality – Conversations with Yogiraj
All the sounds of human speech are the expression of the divine forms of the Saptamatrikas, seven ancient goddesses.
(The number of Saptamatrikas varies, sometimes eight or even nine deities; different sources recall different names of the goddesses.)
- The Matrikas are usually depicted in a group of seven Saptamatrikas (Seven Mothers), worshiped in South India.
- Ashtamatrikas, or eight Matrikas, are venerated in North India and Nepal.
- Inconsistencies in the number of Matrikas (seven, eight, or nine) are often observed in temples.
- The actual number of their statues could be eight (with Ashtamatrika as “the commanding center”) or nine, connecting them to the nine planets.
These goddesses give shape to the vibration of the Universal Sound.
And that’s why the Sanskrit alphabet, Devanagari, is also called the Matrika – the Mother of everything.
It is said in the Shiva Sutras that all mantras are the forms of the letters of the alphabet, which are themselves the forms of Shakti.
The source of knowledge of the various forces and elements of the universe is hidden in the Matrika; the entire universe is described through the 50 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, depicted as a garland of severed human heads carried by Kali.
She is the force that absorbs all forms of speech and all objects during Maha Pralaya, the universal dissolution. These Shaktis are involved in the creation and realization of Super Consciousness and the unfolding of the original source into diverse combinations of elements, the 36 tattvas.
Transformation of Elements by Matrikas:
- Fire element prevails in all elements and forms the basis of their properties.
- Condensed ether manifests as air.
- Concentrated air manifests as fire.
- Condensed fire transforms into water.
- Water eventually becomes the earth element.
We can say that Matrika itself is a superconscious force, Vidya Shakti.
They act in two ways:
- Toward immersion
- Toward liberation of consciousness from identification with material or any forms.
There is a classification of higher Vidya Shakti, with combinations of elements and worlds generated from each of the “lower” Shaktis. These higher Shaktis halt the manifestations of external forms.
