A profound yogic classic of the Nath tradition, Hatha Yoga Pradipika reveals the secret practices of Hatha Yoga. Yogiraj Shailendra Sharma Ji offers a rare, authentic, and experiential commentary based on traditional lineage wisdom.
Among the ancient and mysterious yogic texts, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika is regarded as one of the most profound and complete works on yoga, offering a detailed explanation of every step on the path to self-realization. It is considered a key reference text for advanced practitioners. Based on its structure, Sanskrit style, and terminology, the work is generally placed between the 14th and 15th centuries, though its true period remains unknown. What is certain is that this book was a secret treasure of the Nath tradition and was first published only in the mid-19th century. Even after its publication, the secret yogic practices described within remained well-guarded.
Yogiraj Shailendra Sharma Ji—fifth in the lineage of the great yogi-guru “Babaji Maharaj”—believes that Swatmarama, the author of this text, was an extremely mysterious historical figure. There is no other mention of him elsewhere. He believes that Babaji Maharaj himself authored the Hatha Yoga Pradipika under the name Swatmarama.
In January 2013, during discussions with his disciples, Shailendra Sharma Ji undertook the unprecedented task of providing an extensive explanation of this ancient scripture and the secret yogic techniques it contains. This commentary, offered by a realized yogi who dedicated his life to these practices, presents a detailed and traditional exposition fully aligned with the lineage of Kriya Yoga.
