Discovered in Kashmir, the Shiva Sutras hold a distinguished place among the spiritual scriptures of Sanatana Dharma.
About 250 years ago, a Brahmin named Vasugupta, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, lived in Kashmir. One night, he had a dream in which Lord Shiva himself instructed him to find a cave on Shankara Hill. He was told that inside the cave, he would find a huge rock, and by turning it, he would receive the spiritual knowledge bestowed by Shiva. He was directed to absorb this knowledge and spread it among society.
The very next day, Vasugupta, along with a few others, went to the indicated place. There he found the same cave and the rock. On turning the rock, he discovered 77 sutras carved on it. These very sutras have reached us through the blessings of the great Shiva devotee Vasugupta. The sutras are divided into three parts:
- Shambhavopaya
- Shaktopaya
- Anvopaya
Lord Shiva, the Adi Guru of all disciplines, provided these sutras out of compassion for those devotees who aspire to know the secrets of creation, attain self-realization, and understand these truths through the dedicated practice of yoga.
